Another one gone.

I was sorry to read the other day that one of my boyhood heroes, Phil Read MBE, died the other day, aged 83. A legendary motorcycle racer, known as 'The Prince of Speed', he won no less than seven GP World Championships, the first with Yamaha in 1964. He won four more with them before moving to the Italian team, MV Agusta, and winning two more for them in 1973, 1974. I've seen the MV Agusta at the Goodwood Revival, ridden by another of my heroes, Giacomo Agostini (still alive at 80), and the noise it makes is with me still - awesome! RIP.

Did/do you own a motorcycle?

I used to work in a motorbike shop after school, I think I was about thirteen.

Wow, I would have enjoyed working in a motorbike shop @roz ! Count Domenico Agusta's company also make Helicopters!! I started with a Honda 50 on my 16th birthday before 'defecting' to a Lambretta SX200 scooter! Then a second hand Norton 500 cc. single cylinder that would 'kick back' hard, given half a chance, when trying to kick start it! Approaching my 21st., Mum and Dad helped me buy my first car (they never really liked me on bikes!!), a year old Austin Healey Sprite Mk.4. 'Born again' biker in the 1970's with a Honda 400/4 and later a Suzuki GS750, which was my last bike - not sure how I survived!!

@harryflatters I'm glad you survived, I like them as machines but they're death traps, I'm not surprised your parents weren't keen.

I've never driven one, been on a few pillions in my time though.

The Austin Healey Sprite sounds like fun.
