The woman died after nine days in hospital but, as well as grieving for her, her family is struggling to come to terms with the theft.
Two wedding rings were stolen off the fingers of an elderly patient who died at a hospital in Essex, police have said.
The woman was in her 80s and was admitted to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford on 6 June.
She stayed in the Notley Ward, where her daughter saw the rings were taped over.
When hospital staff removed the tape, however, they saw the rings had been replaced with low-value "tin" bands.
Essex Police said the woman had died after nine days.
Her rings - a gold wedding ring and ruby and diamond eternity band - were not removed during her treatment, police added.
A police spokesman said: "The rings were of sentimental value and the family are understandably distraught that this has happened.
The rings signified happier times in the lady's life, but her family are now robbed of those precious memories

I was not around at that time hehe @renatew5๐บ๐ถ @Happygirl, bit from my youth in Italy, I remember the elderly sitting outside their front door daytime/evening, and chatted to whoever passed by. So by the time you wanted to get somewhere it was always late. My cousin had that with her front door, her neighbours key opened her door, but not viceversa.
When I first came to England in 1965, I was quite gobsmacked about the people leaving their doors open and neighbours freely going into each other's houses and they all looked after each other and knew if someone needed some extra help in the home. Children respected their elders and did not dare misbehave as they do today. I was a bit apprehensive having come from Germany (the war) but I was made welcome, especially when John had to go to Aden and I was left behind and it did not matter where you came from or the colour you are and what language you spoke. What has happened? Every time we came back from an overseas posting we have seen the small changes that had crept in.
With all the help from everyone in our close 'Green Lane' circle, I spoke Brummie English like a native, albeit with a strong German accent, in two months. Ah, the good old days.

No values, no common sense, no compassion, no comprehension.
So far in my lifetime I have not spend any time in hospital as a patient, except when having my boys and more recently as a day patient when having had the cataracts in my eyes removed. I did not wear my rings then with foresight.
In the late sixties and early seventies things like that were not heard off, unless perhaps, the staff in the forces hospital were more honest than some of the cretins that work in NHS nowadays. @Happygirl
It's disgusting, hopefully they manage to get them back.
It's a mad mad world! ๐ญ
If they have been pawned then the shop owner will almost certainly get in touch with the police; they are more reliable than many of their customers. It is unlikely that the customer of the rings would do so.
Things like this have regularly happened, however, they are being reported more these days.
Just DISGUSTING, This is happening more and more now as i also posted on here about that nurse that stole that patients credit card and was using it within minutes of the ladies death in hospital.
WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THIS WORLD?
I doubt they shall get them back now as they have probably already been pawned.
Disgusting, Vile Zombies !
