Tesco created the Jacks brand to compete with Aldi/Lidl in 2018. Now they announce that all Jack's stores will close; some will become Tesco stores. Management said that they 'Learned a lot'.
I believe that the failure of Jacks was down to several factors.
The first is quite simply that Tesco has been 'price matching' some of Aldi's items. So why would someone go into Jacks (and there were only a small number of them) when they could buy at Aldi prices in Tesco (or indeed Aldi).
The second is that the quality of Aldi/Lidl products is often better than branded items rather than the cheap Jacks items.
Finally Aldi/Lidl have massive buying power, not just Aldi/Lidl UK but across the whole of Europe.
Yes, I remember those "Jacks" stores but never been in one. The idea was that they use a similar layout as the discount stores like Aldi and Lidl but the quality and prices did not quite come up to scratch. The only Tesco store we used in the early nineties was a rather dismal store and we changed to Saveway now a Morrison and when Aldi started up we changed and when Lidl came on the scene, we changed and done half and half in either store but still used our family butcher which was on a little shopping centre which had 2 butchers, a Post Office and a Library, Co-op and various other shops. Just 4 stops on the bus but nowadays it is a housing estate. Sometime times change but not for the better.
Being a rather loyal Lidl shopper (None of the other stores nearby), all I can add is that I have always found Aldi and Lidl very good and that Tesco had tried too hard to outmatch both Aldi and Lidl. It also is a parents thing. My parents also shopped at both those stores in Hannover, Germany. When Aldi moved to the south of Germany and Lidl came up to northern Germany, my parents always used both stores.
Also, the improvements over the last 30 years or so, is really something. When we first used Aldi in Castle Bromwich, the goods were just piled high in racking and at the till the receipts just had the price without naming the items bought but that soon changed, onwards and upwards. @Tanith@harryflatters@roz
@Tanith@harryflatters they converted our local Tesco ( in Rawtenstall) into a Jacks in April 2019.
Not many used it, I only went there twice and found it disappointing.
It closed in October 2019 and reverted back to the Tesco store. A lot of the regular Tesco customers were happy to have their old store back, good for employment too as they had to get more staff.
That's interesting @Tanith -they probably learned that they still had no idea how Lidl could sell such great quality products at such low prices and still make more profit than they did!!

I did read that in the paper today @Tanith but have never heard of the Jacks stores before. @harryflatters @roz
