There i was happily watching telly when all of a sudden- complete darkness. There was a power cut in every house down our road and surrounding roads. Luckily we have a couple of large torches so I managed to find matches and light some candles. Two separate neighbours rang to check on us and make sure we had candles, bless them. Thankfully it was only for 45 minutes, and we then had to go around resetting all the clocks. Reminded me of the 70s when we had blackouts on a regular basis.

We have battery operated motion sensor little boxes positioned around the house. Open the lounge door and one comes on in the hall. Also have one on the landing for night trips to the bathroom.
@Janet 💋🍰🍝🍹 They are not really indoor solar lights. They are intended as outdoor intruder type lighting Rob has just placed the solar panels behind curtains facing outwards and they have been working really well. They are not too conspicuous from the outside. I have even set up a string of fairy lights which Nic bought me some years ago inside the log cabin instead of outside and they have been going strong for 5 years now. Lights up very prettily from dusk to dawn in the summer and from dusk to well into the night in the winter.
Oh @Janet 💋🍰🍝🍹, funny that. At least you had an excuse to use some candles 😉
I must say that all through the Lock downs this last year, our next door neighbour and one opposite us across the road have been looking out for us. They either ring or text to make sure we are okay. But it works both ways as we have done a lot for them also over the years. @margaret.s @Pinkaholic79 💖🦄🌺 @nabob @roz @Happygirl @harryflatters @Flossy 🧁🧁🧁 @renatew5😺🐶 @Tanith
The stupid thing is, that it wasn't until this morning I remembered we have a generator under cover in the back garden for moments like this!!!! Duh!
I didn't know you could get solar indoor lights @Flossy 🧁🧁🧁 they sound a very good idea. Will need to look into that.
Probably messed up the digger driver a bit too @Tanith - shocking!! 🤣
In the 90s, a mechanical digger cut through an 11,000 volt underground cable. Repaired in half a day. Messed up the car park though.
Oh @Janet Ansell glad you coped so well. How kind of your neighbours to check on you. I do remember those power cuts in the 70s. Rob was born then and I lived in a flat that was all electric and it was freezing when the power went off. The cuts would be regular and for long periods sometimes for a whole day. As soon as the power went off I got straight into the car and drove to my parents who luckily were on a different timetable for the cuts and had gas as well. The car was always packed with the food and clothing we needed for a couple of days. Nowadays we rely on solar batteries for emergencies - which don't happen very often. In fact Rob has set up lightning in our bedrooms, dining room, lounge and kitchen which we use all year round. In fact my room is being lit at the moment by one of the solar lights. They are as bright as the normal lightning and come on automatically as we move around. The batteries last several hours and recharge even on quite dull days. Oh they are in the hallways, stairs and bathrooms. Most of the house really. Also saves a little bit on electricity. They have been going for 3 or 4 years maybe longer. Have got candles as backup but am reluctant to use them as I am so clumsy nowadays.
I remember when i was a little girl and we used to get tons of power cuts and then the gas went on strike too. @nabob @Janet 💋🍰🍝🍹 @roz @margaret.s @renatew5😺🐶 @harryflatters. @Pinkaholic79 💖🦄🌺 If the gas went then mum would do hard boiled eggs for the neighbors and when the electric went then visa versa, those were the good old days when people really rallied round for one another.
We now have here those candles with batteries in that have a remote control so no messing about with the torches etc
@Janet 💋🍰🍝🍹 Reminds me of when our street kept having small power cuts every few days, then we had a big one which lasted all night. John rigged up a big car inspection light to a spare car battery and I connected a battery powered speaker to a CD player, I'm going back to the nineties now.
People on our street thought we had electricity and every half hour or so there was a knock on the door with one of other of them asking if we had electricity. I had to explain about the light we had.
They found the fault in the early hours of the morning. We all got compensation I think it was about fifty pounds
Turned out to be a faulty underground cable that cut out whenever it rained.
Gosh you had me worried for a second, I thought you'd passed out. Glad that you managed okay with the power cut with torches and candles. Nice of the neighbours to check on you. Yes, I remember the power cuts too......goodness knows how people would cope nowadays. @Janet @renatew5
Just a random power cut? Or caused by something? @Janet 💋🍰🍝🍹. That was very kind of your neighbours to check on you. The last time we had a power cut, lasted a good few hours, as the electric box near by, blew up, it affected many homes in the area, and it was about 20:00, think it got fixed about 23:00 or 24:00.
I remember those cuts in the 70's @Janet 💋🍰🍝🍹 , nice of your neighbours to check on you 😊
