Haven't been to Lidl for months! Didn't go during most of last Summer/Autumn and went once just before Christmas when Jonathan was with us. We usually stock up with lots of things that Mark can't get in Belgium Lidl (particularly minted lamb shanks!) for him to take back as well, as getting most of our Christmas food, which we did this time too - in the event, of course, Mark and the two boys weren't allowed to travel! We do hope they might be able to before too long. We are missing them even more than I am missing going to Lidl!!🤣
We still do our main shop at Lidl - recently it's felt like to safest place to go locally. I have got used to using the Lidl app too - but I can see how it can trap the unwary in to spending more than they need to reach a 'coupon' target - I won't do that but I have had a couple of £10 off coupons which were useful and activated a few of the weekly offers to get a bit off some regular items. I never buy anything I wouldn't do normally just because it's got 15% off! It's easy parking there's no limit either so I can walk off down into town for anything else, we can pick a quiet time and get round easily and avoid other customers. It's always had trolley wipes and sanitizer at the entrance too. The local Aldi was getting crowded but they have put the traffic light system back in operation so that's better. I also get certain other items from Morrisons or Sainsburys. I've never had a grocery delivery! they do them round here but I have never needed one.
Just read on the internet that Lidl are officially the cheapest supermarket in the UK. Not sure how accurate the report is but it is quoted in a few newspapers.
We have a little market here less than fifteen minutes walk away. At the moment there are 2 butchers, one greengrocer one stall that sells vegan pies, cakes and bread and a real French patisserie. All the other stalls are closed so plenty of room for customers to social distance. I had a walk round with Vinny this morning.
The Plant Dude says he is allowed to open but has decided not to under the circumstances but he's left his number on the front of his stall for enquiries and says he can deliver.
We used to have two greengrocers but the other one was put in prison for illegal money lending and selling illegal tobacco.
Oh yes. There's a fish stall on Wednesdays as well. I used to be Saturday manager there until he sold it to the present owner. There was another fish stall but they too ended up in prison for working while claiming to be unable to work I think it was supposed to be back injuries or something. They had been there for many years.
Well that's about it for Bacup our quaint little town , no wonder they film Brassic here.
I am still having deliveries from sainsburys with a £4 delivery charge, and that is with spending £60 . They do more of the vegetarian and health foods we buy. Still do a small top up at Lidl I between. [@Happygirl]
thank you @Happygirl @Tanith Oh dear. I tend to use Sainsburys and Waitrose although Waitrose give me free delivery and Sainsbury's have the best meat and only charge £1 delivery so it's not all bad.
I do get some things from Lidl we go every week.
Beware the comment 'Cheapest'. Like inflation, it depends on what you buy. Fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish might be cheaper in one type of store, household goods might be cheaper elsewhere.
The 'cheapest' is based on a basket of groceries, most of which I would never buy.
If you are having items delivered then the cost of delivery must be factored in. Paying £5 for delivery with one store might be cheaper than free delivery in another store, depending on the cost of the goods.
I tend to go to Lidl and Aldi, depending on the fresh food offers.
I'm stuck with deliveries. Those costs don't include the bags - which are automatically added onto the bill - and the delivery charge. Makes shopping very expensive now. Would love to get in the car and go to Aldi and Lidl. Might not be this side of summer. Realistically I'd rather pay more and be here this time next year.
Ii shop s bit here and a bit there. Use by dates have been awful in Tesco and Sainsburys lately, very hard to find a long use by date. Lidl so far not to bad.
I must admit i am now hooked on Asda online grocery shopping, i was always and forever against it before as it got me out of the home but now i think i am going to stick with it.
The thing i dislike about it though is that the dates are not very good with Asda and we have had to hand back things which in two or three days will be out of date like Actimel, where you get 8 in a tray.
But on the whole they are brilliant and excellent at sorting out things really quickly if they make a mistake.
I do miss not going to our Lidls though, but then again you could never get everything from them.
Asda wins hands down for me.
